These amethyst beads are little chunks of deep space, shining and purple. The amethyst stone, as a type of quartz, is very solid and has been very valuable throughout history. There was even a time when an amethyst stone was as expensive as a diamond, but luckily for us, large deposits of amethyst were found in Brazil. The amethyst stone was used for such important artifacts as the British Crown Jewels and a ring carved with an image of Cupid that St. Valentine wore. The purple amethyst gets its name from the Greek word, "amethystos," which means not drunk, and that also may be why it is a favorite stone of the high-ranking members of the Christian faith, as evidenced by the Papal ring bearing a large amethyst stone.
Amethyst beads have been thought by some people to aid in matters of love, which is not surprising given the amethyst stone's relation to love, being both a beloved jewel of St. Valentine and the birthstone for the month of February.
