These onyx beads are in an intense carbon black color. Black onyx is sometimes polished, carved and sold as is because there is little else that can enhance the already exquisite features. The onyx gemstone was widely used in fine jewelry and stoneware. During the Renaissance period in Europe, onyx gemstones were crafted into earrings, necklaces and bracelets to give its wearer a look of supreme eloquence. Onyx gemstones were also used for its metaphysical properties. According to an old English midwife's tale, the onyx was said to ease the pains of childbirth.
The August birthstone is both the onyx and peridot. The peridot, an olive green gemstone, complements well with the licorice-colored onyx. These two gemstones are sometimes cut into tiny, round faceted gemstones and inlaid onto gold-lacquered rings that are shaped into a panther's head. This design was made popular by Cartier and is often replicated using peridot and onyx beads.
