Real pearls are often thought to be a creamy white color, but in fact a natural pearl can be any color the rainbow in a pastel hue. These freshwater pearls have a lavender sheen to them. Real pearls are formed inside the shells of clams or mussels when something gets into the shell and starts the irritate the creature inside. As a defense mechanism, these animals coat the irritating thing in nacre, and after layer upon layer of nacre, a natural pearl is formed. In 1893, the first cultured pearl was created by Kokicki Mikimoto, and we owe most of our modern real pearls to his cultivation method. Natural pearls will never go out of style.
For June birthdays, consider the lavender-hued freshwater pearl as a funky alternative to the classic white. Lavender pearls are believed by some to be more sensuous than other types of pearls.
