Blue lapis has been mined since BC 7000 in northeastern Afghanistan. These lapis lazuli beads are exotically large and luminous, sparkling like little worlds full of wonder and far away. There is no blue quite as intense as the blue of lapis lazuli, and the rock polishes excellently for a shine that is irreplaceable. Technically speaking, lapis lazuli is a rock instead of a mineral, because it is made up of many types of minerals! Lazurite lends its deep blue, while specks of shiny pyrite, calcite, and other various minerals break up the celestial blue of the lapis lazuli stone just as stars twinkle in the night sky.
Because blue lapis has such a long history of being mined, it has accrued many meanings within different cultures. One thing has been agreed upon by most though. The lapis lazuli stone has been thought to encourage and nurture intellect and wisdom, especially among people in power.
